Yes, Adults Also Have ADHD!

By Joseph Gannon, Ph.D., Psychologist

Did you know that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a highly familial disorder? Research has shown that parents and siblings of children with ADHD are two to eight times more likely to develop ADHD than the general population. If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD and you recognize in yourself similar problems with distractibility, forgetfulness, starting but not completing projects, poor organization, etc., then you might want to consider an evaluation for yourself. Adults can and do have ADHD; and it is not uncommon that there may be ‘co-morbid’ conditions such as anxiety, depression, or substance abuse that are part of the overall clinical picture as well. Adults who have been appropriately evaluated and treated for this condition, can and do experience marked improvement in their capacity for sustained focus, organization and concentration. If you recognize symptoms of ADHD in yourself, it is important to visit a psychiatrist that has many years of experience conducting these evaluations and helping those with ADHD become more productive and focused.
